3 Common Dental Emergencies and How to Deal With Them
Dental emergencies are what happens when we absolutely have to see a dentist but would rather be doing something, anything, else. All health emergencies including dental ones, need urgent medical care to stop them from turning into something disastrous.
This article is for all the tough people out there who may decide to shrug off a bleeding mouth or a dislodged tooth: Some situations are dental emergencies that should not be ignored.
Here are some of them:
Common dental emergencies
1. Having a tooth knocked out
Playing sports, tripping over the cat or running around while being a child can result in the loss of a tooth. It happens frequently to people of all ages. The good news is that the tooth can be salvaged, with some quick action on the part of the patient or caregiver.
If a tooth falls out, pick it up by the crown, not the root. Rinse it off and place it in some warm milk or water and head over to the dentist's office immediately. If a person acts fast, the dentist may be able to re-attach the tooth.
If a person does not make it in time to save the tooth, the gum will be treated, and dental restoration will be completed at a later date. Whenever possible, the patient should opt to replace the missing tooth with a dental implant.
2. A fractured or chipped tooth
A blow to the mouth that does not knock out the tooth may fracture or chip it. This can be a very painful experience. If ignored, an injured tooth will expose its pulp and root to infectious mouth bacteria.
If a person fractures or chips their tooth, they should rinse their mouth with warm water and place an ice pack on the injured tooth. A painkiller can be taken to relieve the pain. And as soon as possible, the person should have the tooth repaired with a dental restoration treatment that the dentist will recommend.
A badly cracked or broken tooth may have to be removed. A less severe injury could be treated with a dental crown, and in mild cases, a filling or dental bonding will do nicely.
3. An infected tooth
A decayed tooth that has been ignored for a long time will eventually get its owner's attention with the amount of pain. Mind-blowing pain. It will become impossible to sleep through the night or have a moment's peace during the day.
A person with an infected tooth should do themselves a favor and have the problem tooth treated by a dentist. Depending on the state of the tooth, the dentist may perform a root canal or extract the tooth.
Are dental emergencies unavoidable?
In life, nothing is certain. But it does not hurt to take precautions. For example: When playing sports, use a mouth guard to avoid injuries to the teeth. As for children's accidents, we can only ask the kids to be careful and keep the doctor on speed dial. If you detect a cavity in your tooth, have it filled before it becomes a waking nightmare.
If a dental emergency does happen, get treatment immediately. It will make all the difference in the world.
