7 Cosmetic Dentistry Treatments To Improve Your Smile

To get you started with your smile makeover, here are seven ways to improve your teeth and gums with cosmetic dentistry.

1. Teeth Whitening

Also known as teeth bleaching, this cosmetic treatment removes stains and discoloration from the teeth.  Professional teeth whitening should be done by a dental professional.  However, these days there are also some great options for whitening your teeth at home such as this product.

For great results, the teeth should be cleaned by a dental professional before the teeth whitening process begins. For even better results, teeth whitening should be done by a dentist or at the very least, with the help of one.

2. Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is the direct application of a tooth-colored putty onto one or more teeth. It is used to correct small chips and fractures, as well as to coat discolored teeth and fill small cavities.

This non-invasive procedure takes about 30 minutes per tooth.

3. Dental Veneers

A dental veneer is a thin porcelain shell bonded onto the front surface of the tooth. Like dental bonding, veneers are colored just like teeth.

They are used to fix gapped, chipped or stained teeth and can also be fitted over slightly crooked teeth to make them look straight.

One limitation of veneers is that they cannot be used to fix severely crowded or crooked teeth. Orthodontic treatments are needed for that.

4. Dental Caps

Also known as dental crowns, caps are used to repair teeth that have been damaged by disease or breakage. They are also used as a cosmetic treatment to improve the shape and size of teeth.

Since they are designed to last decades, dental caps are a permanent way to improve the appearance of the teeth.

With good oral habits and dental caps, a person never has to worry about getting a touch-up.

5. Dental Implants

Dental implants improve the smile by replacing missing or badly damaged teeth. The process of getting an implant takes several months to complete and requires two or more minor surgeries.

Dental implants are actually permanent artificial teeth that come with a root and a crown. They perform all the functions of natural teeth: They grind food, stimulate the jaw and make a person’s smile beautiful and gap free.

6. Gum Contouring

A person who has a gummy smile, uneven gums or receding gums should consider gum contouring. A cosmetic dentist reshapes the gums by using a soft tissue laser to carefully remove the parts of the gum that make a person’s teeth look short or uneven. The laser cuts away the soft tissue while cauterizing the wound.

After the procedure, the gums only need a few days to fully heal.

Any swelling and discomfort felt after the reshaping goes away in a day or two. In the meantime, pain medication helps. To help the gum heal faster, a person should stick to soft foods for a few days.

7. Tooth Shaping/ Enamel Shaping

This cosmetic dental treatment improves the shape and sometimes the size of the teeth. If a tooth is too long, the dentist will file it down to reduce its length.

Enamel shaping also corrects teeth that are slightly chipped.
