Implant-supported dentures

By understanding exactly how many implants are needed for implant-supported dentures, a patient can determine whether or not this option is right for them. Additionally, they will know what to expect once the process begins.

The following is everything one needs to know about implant-supported dentures, including how many implants are required to securely hold the dentures in place.

What are Implant-supported Dentures?

Implant-supported dentures are a set of dentures (replacement teeth) that are attached to dental implant posts while they are worn.

A traditional set of dentures is either supported by the soft and hard tissues of the oral cavity or is clasped onto existing teeth. However, dentures that are supported by the surrounding tissue are not as comfortable and clasping the dentures to natural teeth is often not an option.

An implant-supported denture provides a viable solution for many who are missing all or the majority of their natural teeth.

How Does the Process Work?

In order to fully understand how many implants are needed for implant-supported dentures, it is important to first understand how the process works.

After the initial consultation and both the patient and the dentist agree to treatment, the mouth is prepared for the implant placement, which may involve bone grafting and treatment for periodontal disease.

Then the implants are surgically placed into the jawbone. Once the implant fuses into the jawbone, a second procedure is performed to reveal the abutment of the implant, which the dentures are then attached to.

How Many Implants Are Needed?

First, patients should know that the more implants there are, the more securely fastened the dentures are going to be.

In the same manner as nails with wood, the more implants the stronger the support. In most cases, the amount of dental implants that are needed to support overdentures is four, although each case is different and more may be required to ensure that the dentures are stable when worn.

In some cases, as many as eight dental implants may be required with implant-supported dentures, although four or five is more or less the usual amount needed.

Benefits of Implant-supported Dentures

The most obvious and noticeable benefit of implant-supported dentures is the ability to eat, talk, smile and feel good throughout each and every day. Of course, you’ll also gain back some confidence as well.

When compared to other forms of teeth replacement, implant-supported dentures are often the best, most long-lasting way to replace a large section – if not all of your natural teeth.
